Golden South Sea Pearls

Of all the pearl varieties there are none more coveted than gold pearls and gold pearl jewellery. They are cultivated from the “gold-lip” variety of the Pinctada maxima, an oyster found in the warm waters of the south Pacific Ocean. As with all pearl production now, a small bead is introduced into the oyster and pearl forms around the bead naturally. It takes between 2 – 4 years for a pearl to mature with pearls sizes varying between 8 mm and 13mm with occasionally pearls of 20mm being produced. Such large sizes an very rare and consequently command a very high price as they are highly sort after.

Gold Pearls are unique as the best they appear to be formed from spun gold. They are the rarest of all the pearl varieties and the colour can vary depending on the intensity of the gold hue. They range from a champagne hue to a more yellowish colour, with the intense gold colour being the most coveted. Many pearls can then have overtones of rose and bronze to give them an almost metallic finish. Golden south sea pearls have a very thick nacre which makes them strong and resilient and perfect for creating pearl jewellery. Being made by a living organism no two pearls are identical with some being almost perfectly round and others drop, button, semi-baroque, circle-drop and circle-button and baroque. The more spherical the pearl the more valuable.

How do I know if my gold pearl has been colour treated?

Because gold pearls are very valuable for their size some makers dye white pearls to make them more valuable. A naturally coloured goldpearl size range from 8mm and larger, therefore if the pearl you are offered is any smaller than it is probably a treated freshwater or Akoya pearl. If you are unsure refer to a reputable jeweller.
