Pink Diamond Broome – The Story Of The Argyle Pink Diamond
The Argyle Diamond mine is located in the East Kimberly region in Western Australia. This is a remote and inhospitable region, hot and dry in winter and hot and wet in the tropical summer. The first precious thing to be discovered was gold in the 1960s. Prospectors continue to forage for further gold deposits until in the 1970’s a few small diamonds were found. Further research was undertaken and a large deposit of alluvial diamonds was confirmed in 1979. However, it took until 1984 before the Argyle Diamond mine was fully operation. The mine has produced to date in excess of half a billion carats of diamonds, which sounds like a lot, but 95% of production is industrial grade diamonds with only 5% considered to be of gem quality. It is the world’s largest single producer of diamonds but the mine is scheduled to close in 2020. In the area of pink diamonds the mine is important because it produces over 90% of world’s supply of this rare and beautiful gemstone. People have speculated what will happen to value of pink diamonds after the mine closes. As with anything rare and valuable it seems inevitable that once production ceases and the annual supply falls to a trickle the price will consistently increase.
The History, Beauty and Rarity of Argyle Pink Diamonds
It’s sometimes said that there are two ways to approach your life: to create, plan and manage or to allow spontaneity and chance to run its course. Of course, the truth is somewhere in the middle. But as a jeweller who specialises in creating custom made engagement rings and wedding rings, you may have guessed that I believe in carefully planning your ring with you, before working meticulously to bring to life a ring which you truly love. However, working in the jewellery industry means that I have heard and read stories that bring home just how important chance and luck are, and that is especially true in the case of the Argyle pink diamonds. These precious and rare stones, found right here in Australia, have a story that has added a new chapter to the long history of our fascination with diamonds. To give this some prospective, the entire mine production of pink diamonds over half a carat in weight would fit in the palm of your hand. There are obviously more pink diamonds weighing less than half a carat and these are also rare and valuable.
